ÐSorption and transformation of 1-naphthol by a K-smectite (K-SWy-2) were studied using batch sorption isotherms, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The sorbents included three preparations of the reference smectite clay (SWy-2): (1) whole clay containing naturally occurring carbonate impurities, (2) SWy-2 with the removal of carbonate impurities, and (...

A new six-channel aircraft multispectral scanner has been developed to exploit mineral signature information at wavelengths between 8 and 12 micrometers. Preliminary results show that igneous rock units can be identified from their free silica content, and that carbonate as well as clay-bearing units are readily separable on the digitally processed images.

Conditional stability constants have been determined for U(IV) and U(VI) Boom Clay humic acid (BCHA) and Aldrich humic acid (AHA) complexes, under anaerobic and carbonate free conditions. The constants are needed for nuclear waste repository performance assessment purposes. The U(IV) constants were obtained by developing an approach based on the solubility product of amorphous U(OH)4. The U(VI)...

This study investigates the use of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) for rapid soil analysis. Photoacoustic spectroscopy requires very minimal sample preparation (air-drying), which is a major advantage compared to the more traditional transmittance technique, which requires time-consuming preparation of pellets. The amount of information contained in the PAS spectra appears to be similar to tha...

zinc (zn) is an essential micronutrient needed by plants, animals and humans. bioavailability of zn to plant root is controlled through sorption process in soils. to evaluate the effect of citric acid on zn sorption, a batch experiment was conducted with two soil samples (s1, s2), that differed in their clay and calcium carbonate contents. three levels of citric acid (0, 0.5, 1 mm) and twel...

abstract the availability of heavy metals in the soil is related to their partitioning between solution and solid phases and expressed by sorption isotherm. twenty surface soil samples (0-30 cm) belonging to five soil subgroups were taken from agricultural regions of western azerbaijan province. the sorption isotherms of pb were determined by equlibrating the soil with solutions containing 0, 1...

carbonates are among the most common soil constituents in arid and semiarid zones. they exhibit many significant differences in their chemical and mineralogical, suite, origin, physical and micromorphological properties and consequently in their activities in soil. the differences cause different properties of calcareous soils. six profiles of aridisols and inceptisols with carbonate accumulati...

The influence of clay preparation methods on the sorption and hydrolysis of carbaryl (1-naphthyl, N-methyl carbamate) by K+-saturated reference smectite SWy-2 was studied. Four methods were utilized: (1) The reference (or specimen) clay used as received was K+-saturated (hereafter referred to as whole clay). (2) High-speed centrifugation (3295g) of whole clay resulted in a pellet with three dis...

abstract a study was conducted to evaluate the effect of incubation time, sewage sludge and clay content on the distribution of nickel and cadmium in different fractions of selected calcareous soils. to meet this purpose, an experiment with two different soils (4 and 30 percent caco3), two different textures (8 and 40 percent clay), two levels of nickel (0 and 100 mg.kg-1), two levels of cadmiu...

a r t i c l e i n f o In Soil Taxonomy three diagnostic subsurface horizons reflect clay enrichment: the argillic, kandic, and natric horizons. Clay illuviation is recognized in Soil Taxonomy at some level in 10 of the 12 orders, including the percent of the soil series in the USA contain taxonomically defined clay-enriched horizons. However, many other soils contain Bt horizons that do not qua...
